NOSE CORRECTION

It is advisable to wait until age of 14 or 15 years and possibly older for boys, before undergoing rhinoplasty. This is because the nose may not be fully developd at a younger age. It is essential for you to have thought carefully about surgery and that the desire to change your appearance is based on your own feelings rather than those of your parents or friends. This procedure is done to improve the shape of the nose or to correct an existing deformity from birth or following trauma. Rhinoplasty can be performed in conjunction with other surgeries like face lift or lip correction. Sometimes certain breathing problems related to the internal nasal fratures can be corrected at the same time as nose reshaping is performed.

Decision and Procedure:

It is important that you have a clear idea of how you would like your nose to look and at the same time realise that there are limitations to the procedure. You should be very precise about the changes you would like to make in your nose. Improving sbreathing difficulties is one of the aspects of rhinoplasty. A flat and depressed nose is augmented by a silicone prosthesis or bone or cartilage from the chest. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages.

Because of individual factors, not everyone will achieve the same results from rhinoplasty and the goal is to obtain the best possible results for you. This operation can be done under local or general anaesthesia. In most of the procedures, the incisions are placed inside your nose. Occassionaly incisions are placed at the base of the nostrils and these are hidden in natural creases.

Preparation for surgery:

  • Smoking and aspirin can increase the chances of complications, so it would be advisable for you to stop them 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after surgery.
  • Notify the doctor or nurse of any cardiac or medical problems you may have, allergies to any kind of tape, drugs or medications must also be reported.
  • Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before. Have body and hair wash with a medicated soap and shampoo.
  • If you are taking any medications, please confirm with your doctor that it may be taken with a small sip of water on the day of surgery
  • Do not wear your contact lenses, makeup, facial cream or lotion.
  • Wear clothing that fits loosely and does not have to go over your head, preferably a button down shirt, sweat pants, and slip on shoes.
  • Leave all jewelry and valuables at home.

First week following surgery:

  • Expect the effects of anaesthesia to pass slowly, which may take a variable amount of time. Pain medications may prolong the sense of fogginess or cause an upset stomach. The anaesthetic and pain medicines tend to produce constipation, so it is advisable to eat high-fiber foods. Start with liquids, and advance to a normal diet when you are sure your stomach is comfortable. Try to maintain a low-salt diet to discourage water retention.
  • Your nostrils may be blocked and packing will be removed after 24 hours.
  • A plaster cast splint and tape dressing will be applied following surgery. The cast will stay on for 10-14 days. DO NOT GET THE CAST WET.
  • Immediately report any redness, pain, swelling from the incisions to the doctor.
  • The eyes may be swollen and black and blue for approximately one to two weeks after surgery.
  • Bend down as little as possible and when necessary, bend from the knees and not from the waist.
  • Always use pillows to keep the head elevated when sleeping or resting.

After few weeks of surgery:

  • There will be swelling, firmness and tenderness at the tip of your nose, which may take up to a year to diminish. This is normal. During this period, you may have difficulty breathing through your nose, which is also normal and will gradually improve as the swelling diminishes.
  • It will be a few months before you can expose your reshaped nose to direct sunlight. You can use sunblock to protect your skin.
  • If the bones of the nose have been altered, it may be a number of weeks before you can wear glasses without special support such as tape

What will be the final result of rhinoplasty?

The goal of rhinoplasty is a nose that looks natural and blends harmoniously with other facial features. Healing is gradual and you should expect to wait upto a year to see the final results. Occassionally a touchup may be desired to further improve the results. The additional procedure is usually less extensive than the original operation.
